The expiration of abrasive discs
Do sanding discs also expire?
Well yes, even i abrasive discs they have an expiration date that refers to the "stable" period of the disk itself. What does it mean? The abrasive disc is made up of organic resins which, consequently, are subject to deterioration. The period of validity of the disk is called stable and refers to the period of efficiency of the disc itself, guaranteed by the manufacturer, during which the abrasive properties are stable during use.
The abrasive wheels are valid for 3 years starting from the date of production; the expiry date – may be placed on any fixed part of the disc, such as the ring or label – in accordance with European standard EN12413:2019.
But there are many factors that determine the life of an abrasive disc: the type of processing, the type and quality of the disc itself. The abrasive wheels used for cut, sdrool, smooth, polish, rectify and so on, depending on the time and method of use, they can "expire" even before the date shown on the ring.
Certainly, correct use will guarantee greater durability and efficiency as well as correct conservation of the disk.
In fact, abrasive wheels must not be left unattended, exposed to the sun and bad weather or stored in places where there are high temperatures and humidity; the ideal is the storage in dry environments, with medium humidity. The position in which they are stored can also determine the deformation of the product, so it is advisable to place the grinding wheels horizontally in their box.
Finally, we add that attention, cleaning and care prolong the life of abrasive wheels.
